PRESS RELEASE
OUR PLACE - THE GLOBAL WORLD HERITAGE PHOTOGRAPHIC PROJECT, CONGRATULATES THE UNITED NATIONS ON PROCLAIMING 2009 AS THE 'YEAR OF ASTRONOMY'.
Our Place, the world-wide photographic project which has official UNESCO World Heritage Centre partnership status, has documented astronomy related sites in various regions of the world and as far removed from one another as the Mayan city of Calakmul in Mexico, the Cheomseongdae Observatory in Gyeongju, Korea,[ the oldest observatory in Asia], and the Ulugh-Beg Observatory in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
"The Our Place photographers have been impressed by seeing the legacies of the diverse cultures who have studied the sky for thousands of years" said Geoff Steven, Director of OUR PLACE.
"We are constantly photographing extraordinary World Heritage sites around the world and we realise how many are related to mankind's exploration of the stars and the universe we live in", said Geoff Steven.
The UN has appointed UNESCO as the lead agency and focal point for the Year of Astronomy, with a view to highlighting the scientific value of cultural sites connected with astronomy.
"Inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list is a great way to protect these important sites" said Steven "We at Our Place are supportive of the world-wide endeavours to recognize the human race's cultural history".
Both the Calkumal and Samarkand observatory sites are featured in "Places Of Wonder and Discovery " the recently published Our Place book.
